The four major structural components of our face are skin, fat, muscle, and bone. As we age, volume loss in these structures contributes to many of the visible signs of aging. Dermal fillers, an injectable treatment performed in our medical office. They can help smooth lines and replenish lost volume, restoring a more youthful appearance.
So, what exactly is a dermal filler?
Dermal fillers are soft, gel-like substances that are injected under the skin and can be composed of a variety of substances. One of the most common compounds used in dermal fillers is hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a naturally occurring substance found in our skin, and plays a major role in keeping skin hydrated and volumized.
One of the main benefits of using an HA filler, aside from the more natural appearance when injected, is they can be dissolved by a special solution in case of an adverse event, or if the person dislikes the appearance.
Other available dermal fillers include those made from calcium hydroxyapatite, poly-L-lactic acid, polymethyl methacrylate, and autologous fat (fat that is transplanted from another part of your body).
Each of these substances has its own pros and cons, as well as a unique density, longevity, and texture. It’s important to talk to our Injector Specialist and medical staff to determine what will work best for you.
Where are dermal fillers used?
Most commonly used in the smoothing of deep under-eye circles, lifting of cheekbones, volumization of the lips, smoothing of lip lines and nasolabial folds (the creases run from the side of the nose to the corners of the mouth). They can also be used to help rejuvenate your hands, chest, and to help sculpt the jawline or to deter the appearance of cellulite on the legs and buttocks.
What is the right quantity of dermal filler?
Many of our dermal filler patients are curious about the results they can expect with different amounts of filler.
Representation of dermal filler volume (ml) on a teaspoon.
1ml is equivalent to 1 syringe of filler, therefore 4 ml represents 4 syringes of filler. In order to achieve desired results the appropriate amount of filler must be used and your medical provider will assess your needs during your personalized consultation.
How long do Dermal Fillers last?
This is one of the most common questions we hear from our patients. To understand the answer, we have to consider more than just the physical or chemical properties of the products.
Several factors are important to consider when you look at how long a filler lasts after injection. As we mentioned earlier, filler material and treatment area are two of the main factors. Filler consistency and how fast your body metabolizes fillers are the other two main factors.

Another important thing to keep in mind is Filler injections can stimulate collagen production in a treatment area. This means that you can enjoy visible facial rejuvenation or contouring results longer because fillers will kick start your own body into producing a substance that restores volume in that area.
